Retail Sector
Whilst many small retailers are aware that health & safety requirements are necessary exactly what is required is often not clear.
HSE figures show that within the retail industry in 2008/09 there were
- 14 Fatal Incidents
- 3,427 reported major injuries
- 13,437 Over 3 day reportable injuries
- Average non-fatal reportable injury rate of 940 per 100,000. This is slightly higher than industry average at 890 per 100,000 employees.
These figures seem to suggest that there are very real health & safety issues within the retail industry and all businesses need to address and be seen to address such issues.
Areas that need to be looked at include slips, trips & falls, fire, manual handling & violence.
Unfortunately an employee slipping or cutting themselves can lead to an expensive claim, a fire or serious injury may lead to a more serious prosecution. Owners must ensure that they have a safety system, no matter how simple, in place to address these issues.
